The Deeds of Rachel B.

Rachel’s Current Deed Count: 25
  • Spared some change for a man who was trying to collect enough money to buy a cup of coffee
  • Bought a 5 Guys cheeseburger for a hungry man.  Despite performing this good deed, she admits to feeling a little bit guilty that she did not buy him a healthier meal.  That is only a detail though, Rachel…you are truly one of Danny’s Heroes!
  • Purchased a copy of Street Sense, a news paper which ”offers economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness in our community through a newspaper that elevates voices and encourages debate on poverty and injustice.”
  • Helped my {currently unemployed} friend update and improve her resume in the hope that an outside perspective will improve her chances of finding a great job.
  • Made a charitable donation to a foundation which pays for education and healthcare for underprivileged people in {exact location held confidential}.
  • Woke up early in order to participate in a team event with some friends; if she had not woken up (and she would have rather slept in), the team wouldn’t have had enough people to participate!
  • After receiving an email with the subject line “I need a favor!” (a perfect opportunity for a Hero-In -Training), she granted said favor by providing feedback on an Italian Facebook page, as well as “liking” said page.  In doing so, her friend acknowledged that Rachel’s assistance reduced “the stress level of her and her boss.”

  • Donated to an organization that works to end poverty in the developing world.
  • Cooked for and hosted a dinner for friends and friends-of-friends who had no place to go on that given Saturday
  • Helped a woman pick up a stack of papers that she had accidentally dropped on the floor because she was carrying too many things.
  • Distributed candy and notes of encouragement (e.g. “you are awesome!”) to passersby in Adams Morgan to cheer them up (on Random Acts of Kindness day).
  • Notified coworkers that there was lots of leftover food in the company kitchen.  Normally, this would not qualify, but Rachel went out of her way to find all of the coworkers whom she knew would be interested in said food.
  • Helped a friend’s volunteer group serve food to a group of hungry people.
  • Assured a lost and worried lady on the bus that she was indeed traveling on the correct bus route, and that she would eventually arrive at her destination.
  • Cooked for and hosted a dinner for several friends who had just gone through a really tough week
  • Listened attentively to and conversed with (for > 15 minutes) a sweet old man on the bus who was very excited to tell me about his interests and life challenges.
  • Housed a neighbor and her adorable kiddies who were locked out of their house, until their nanny came home
  • Helped my friend participate in the Avon walk to raise money for breast cancer research. And her name is almost the same as Danny’s– it was meant to be!
  • I let my tired, hungry roommate have my Friday night leftovers, even though said leftovers were going to be my weekend meals and I was looking forward to not having to cook for the rest of the weekend.
  • When her roomate’s computer broke, Rachel called all of her friends in order to find one who could fix it.  She was eventually successful in the form of hero-in-training Mike W. (see above).
  • Organized a large fundraising event to raise money for spinal surgery for children with tuberculosis.
  • Walked a friend one mile to the nearest Metro such that he did not have to walk alone.
  • Gave $1.25 for a thirsty athlete who had forgotten his wallet, so that he could purchase a drink to quench his thirst.
  • Donated money to help ”provide surgery costs for 14 year-old Daguma” who is “suffering from tuberculosis of the spine.” (deed done concurrently with Yang K.)
